A typical energy cost reduction project comprises the following phases:

• Collecting data and creating a detailed snapshot of the energy required for individual processes
• Drawing up an energy balance using a bottom-up approach and comparing it with your  purchasing data 
• Conducting a pinch analysis and calculating the economically optimized minimum energy usage (energy target)
• Carrying out MER (maximum energy recovery) design for new, optimized linkages and waste eat recovery
• Discussing the design with users/operators/plant constructors in order to arrive at the best possible plant concept without any conflicts
• Evaluating measures intended to bring about the target situation while taking account of the investment budget and payback times
• Prioritizing measures and drawing up a schedule for putting them into practice
