Developing the COPS Sensor for the Rosetta Satellite

The measuring systems on the Rosetta satellite are designed for research into the comet Virtanen. The COPS (Comet Pressure Sensor) measures extremely low pressures and is designed, in combination with the mass spectrometer, to research the matter on the comet.

Our tasks included:

  • Concept development for the sensor
  • Astronautic design of the structure, strength analyses, natural frequency calculations, etc.
  • Thermal simulation and design of the system taking into account the radiation and heat conductivity problems in space
  • Compiling the manufacturing documents
  • Preparing all necessary verification for the ESA
